Website TrafficIf you are a website owner, you probably know just how important traffic  is when it comes to the success of your website.  Internet website traffic, also referred to as “web traffic”, is the term used to describe just how many people are visiting you website, and how many  are leaving straight away.  Internet website traffic will also tell you just which pages or links your visitors are using, and from what location they are from.

How Is Internet Website Traffic Measured?

It’s important to regularly keep tabs on your traffic so you can see just how popular your website is, and which sites or pages are being viewed the most.  This will help you further tailor your site to increase further interest and attract more visitors.

To view traffic, you can do so through the web server log file.  The web server log file is an automatically generated list of all pages that have been viewed.  The log file measures “hits” that you receive on a web page or even an image that may be on the page.  It can also tally up the number of “page views” that you receive, which is the number of times a visitor simply navigates to a particular page of your site.

There are a number of different pieces of information that are gathered when you are reviewing internet website traffic.  Some of these include:

  • The amount of visitors that are visiting your site on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis
  • The average number of web page viewings per individual visitor
  • Domain classes (IP address information)
  • When your page is most regularly viewed (this can help especially if you are setting up some sort of promotional campaign, or want to post new information for viewers to receive instantly)
  • The most popular pages of your web site
  • “Top Paths” (how your visitors got to your website and how they exited)
  • The search engines used to find your site

You can also use website analysis services that enable you to learn even more from those who are visiting your website, or you can utilize HTML tags to further track internet website traffic.

What Is Internet Website Traffic Overload?

If you have too much internet website traffic, then your page may become bogged down or even stop functioning.  This is mostly caused by there being more “file” requests” than your server can handle.  Sometimes this is done with malicious intent by other users, or it may be that your website has received some promoting from an outside source.  If you find yourself having bandwidth issues from your ISP, contact them and see why your website may no longer be functioning properly and inquire about increasing your bandwidth to accommodate your increase in internet website traffic.
